OCS 2007 R2: Cannot perform this action, and the cause is unkown.

Have you ever received this message while trying to expand a distribution group on Office Communicator? These sorts of issues can be frustrating when they are inconsistently popping up in your network. If you are only seeing this issue sporadically on clients, here’s a quick step that may head off a lot of digging through IIS logs on your OCS Server.

On the problematic workstation: 

  1. Logon with the problematic account
  2. Exit Communicator
  3.  Delete the the contents of the following folder:
    %SystemRoot%\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Communicator\sip_sip.user@domain.com
  4. Restart Communicator
  5. If the issue is resolved.. woo hoo! If not, have a look at the following articles and do some further research to check your environment:
